Workbench Con Day 2 Recap
I didn’t really get to posting a recap after Day 1 as it was just registration and a meet and greet and that turned into a pretty late night. However a quick shout out to Jenny @ Sacred Cinder as one of two lovely ladies who organized a great after party over at the Marriott Pulse Lounge where people could continue to mingle and meet.
What an amazing experience thus far and I don’t mean to sound starstruck as that’s not really the proper term, but it was quite surreal to meet people you’ve been talking to, getting advice from, sharing stories, etc.. for years in person. People like Brad from FixThisBuildThat who was one of the first people that really inspired me to make, Stephen - The Wood Pastor, Mark - Remarkable Woodworks, Vik - The Stump Shop, Dom - MinspiredLiving. Andrew - Field Treasure Designs, and the list goes on. Not to mention legends like Bob Clagett from I Like To Make Stuff and Jimmy DiResta, quite a cool experience.
I won’t get into all the details, however besides just meeting people and having a few glasses of wine, today was filled with a ton of knowledge bombs where other Makers just talked about their experiences with Sponsors, Instagram, YouTube, SEO, and the list goes on. These conferences, or conferences in general are about networking and grabbing a handful of nuggets that you can take back home. Ended up getting a lot of great nuggets on how to properly approach sponsors and what exactly they are looking for and a few notes really surprised me.
One thing that I have noticed is the US and Canadian markets are very different in the way that the US companies marketing departments are miles ahead of where Canada is. Canada is on the verge of where the US is which is a great opportunity for us as Makers.
Lastly and I’ll end with this, community is what really drives what we do and it’s unlike any community I’ve been apart of, even the IT community of which I belong to during the day. People wanting to just help without expecting anything in return, sharing knowledge, supporting and uplifting and on and on. Proud to be part of such a cool community which is showcased in a small way here at Workbench Con. I say small way because there are so many others out there that couldn’t make it to this that do the same thing.
Just a quick one tonight. Here are a few pictures from the day.
